While they exist on healthy skin, some reports suggest they are found in higher numbers in rosacea patients.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22933353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24248990\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <strong>the key is not the &#8216;quantity&#8217; of Demodex, but the &#8216;vulnerability&#8217; of the follicles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the skin barrier is strong, Demodex byproducts (bacteria, exoskeleton fragments, etc.) cannot enter the skin.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22933353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6<\/a><\/sup> But <strong>when the barrier weakens, these byproducts penetrate the skin<\/strong> and cause inflammation. Steroids prescribed for other conditions should not be used arbitrarily for rosacea symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German Society of Dermatology (2022) and the National Rosacea Society (NRS) state that steroids are not indicated for rosacea and may actually worsen it.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35929658\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">9<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32035944\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10<\/a><\/sup> The reasons are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They thin the skin barrier, worsening the fundamental cause of rosacea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immune suppression leads to an increase in Demodex, and byproducts penetrate more easily through the weakened barrier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discontinuation causes a rebound effect where blood vessels dilate further, worsening symptoms.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21572787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">11<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even individuals without prior rosacea can develop rosacea-like symptoms after long-term use on the face.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sec-5\">6. They can also mitigate the die-off reaction during the initial stages of Soolantra use.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21974750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when the skin barrier is weak, excessive absorption can lead to contact dermatitis; therefore, it is advisable to check sensitivity with a <a href=\"https:\/\/miragen.clinic\/%ec%b2%a9%ed%8f%ac-%ea%b2%80%ec%82%ac\/\">patch test<\/a> before use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to anti-inflammatory effects, Protopic and Elidel stimulate TRPV1 receptors on cutaneous sensory nerves, releasing Substance P and CGRP.
