However, it is less likely to clog pores, making it more suitable when acne is present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Protopic is an ointment, it contains relatively fewer preservatives and emulsifiers, so the risk of contact allergy is lower. However, it can clog pores and may worsen acne. When is it used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elidel or Protopic are considered for dermatitis in areas where steroid use is burdensome, such as the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice between the two is determined by assessing the degree of pore blockage using a <a href=\"https:\/\/miragen.clinic\/en\/woods-lamp-examination\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"6388\">Wood&#8217;s lamp examination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If <strong>pores are clogged, Elidel<\/strong> is considered first. This is because <a href=\"https:\/\/miragen.clinic\/en\/protopic\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"6419\">Protopic<\/a> can clog pores and worsen acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may also help relieve burning and flushing in neurogenic rosacea-like dermatitis. This is because Elidel can reduce symptoms by depleting neuropeptides (substance P and CGRP). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-5\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Why it burns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you use Elidel, <strong>stinging in the eyes, burning, itching, and worsening redness<\/strong> may occur during the first few days. After the first application, symptoms can begin within a few hours, and in rare cases, the burning can keep you up that night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens because Elidel stimulates the <strong>heat sensor<\/strong> (TRPV1) in sensory nerves, causing stored <strong>substance P<\/strong> (triggers burning) and <strong>CGRP<\/strong> (triggers flushing) to be released all at once. With repeated application, these become depleted and usually resolve within a week.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28512670\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17388925\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this initial worsening is not only uncomfortable\u2014it often causes anxiety and leads many people to stop using it. Using an <strong>Itching Cream<\/strong> together, which suppresses the heat sensor, can help reduce the initial flare-up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In neurogenic rosacea-like dermatitis, the release and depletion of substance P and CGRP can even be a <strong>treatment goal<\/strong>. It can cause contact dermatitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the skin barrier is severely compromised, Elidel can be absorbed excessively and cause <strong>contact dermatitis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key ingredient to watch for is <strong>benzyl alcohol<\/strong>. In this case, discontinue use and seek medical attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. How to use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-custom-color-5-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-964a2d948458f3a5d0971d39eedbd128\">\n<li>Apply a thin layer to the affected area <strong>once in the evening<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have an itching cream, apply it whenever you feel burning or itching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard for the amount to apply is the <strong>FTU (Finger-Tip Unit)<\/strong>. The first week, apply every other day; the next week, every three days; then every four days\u2014reduce it this way.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12093983\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-8\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Long-term use and safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people feel anxious after receiving an Elidel prescription when they see the phrase \u201crisk of lymphoma\u201d in the leaflet. This is a black box warning the FDA added in 2006 based only on a theoretical possibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In large-scale follow-up studies over nearly 20 years since then, no meaningful causal relationship has been confirmed between Elidel use and the development of lymphoma or skin cancer.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35002327\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because it does not weaken the skin barrier like steroids do, it can be used long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-9\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key to treating dermatitis is restoring the skin barrier, but to do that, there are times when inflammation must be controlled first. Steroids calm inflammation the fastest and most reliably, but they can weaken the barrier. In such cases, Elidel is an alternative to consider.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elidel\u2019s biggest drawback\u2014early burning\u2014can be eased by using Itching Cream together. However, because it is a cream formulation, there is a possibility of contact dermatitis due to additives.
