While studies using hamster sebocytes showed a reduction in lipid synthesis and accumulation, results on actual human faces vary by area, making it difficult to view Differin Gel as a medication that reduces sebum secretion.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23473858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17309452\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Differences from Aklief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miragen.clinic\/en\/aklief\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"6422\">Aklief<\/a>, a fourth-generation retinoid ointment, is a cream containing 0.005% trifarotene that selectively binds to RAR-\u03b3, the most abundant retinoid receptor in the skin.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33871811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=62d910db-85a6-4696-b69b-4bd2f3080cfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup> In contrast, the third-generation Differin Gel is a 0.1% adapalene gel that binds not only to RAR-\u03b3 but also to RAR-\u03b2, which is widely distributed in areas other than the skin.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33871811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9990413\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup> Therefore, Aklief is expected to have less impact on other tissues than Differin, even if absorbed systemically.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=62d910db-85a6-4696-b69b-4bd2f3080cfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1152\" src=\"https:\/\/miragen.clinic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/differin-adapalene-vs-aklief-final.webp\" alt=\"A photograph comparing the product form and size of two topical retinoids by placing a Differin Gel 0.1% tube and an Aklief 0.005% pump container side-by-side vertically on a white background.\" class=\"wp-image-14954\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, what is actually important is not the systemic effect. This is because the limiting factor for topical retinoid treatment is dermatitis, not systemic impact.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33871811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, Differin Gel has much stronger evidence than Aklief. Differin Gel 0.1% was proven through direct comparative studies to be less irritating to the skin than 0.025% tretinoin gel (1st generation), whereas there are no studies yet proving that Aklief is less irritating than 1st or 3rd generation retinoids.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9990421\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=62d910db-85a6-4696-b69b-4bd2f3080cfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thaiclinicaltrials.org\/show\/TCTR20260127006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Precautions against dermatitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topical retinoids weaken the bonds between keratinocytes and also cause changes in the lipids that fill the spaces between cells, thereby weakening the skin barrier. How to Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-custom-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-custom-color-5-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Squeeze an amount of Differin Gel about the size of <strong>half a fingernail<\/strong>, mix it with a moisturizer, and apply a thin layer over the entire face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. The reason for mixing with a moisturizer is to start with such a small amount that it would be impossible to spread across the entire face otherwise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the first 2 weeks, apply <strong>once every 3 days in the evening<\/strong> and observe your skin&#8217;s reaction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your skin becomes red, stings, or itches after use, reduce the amount.
