This is because many people find it more comfortable to fall asleep due to drowsiness than to remain awake while itching. For patients whose itching is severe enough that they sleep wearing mittens, or who wake up with scratch marks in the morning, Peniramin Tablets may be used to make the night a little easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To put it in an exaggerated way, it is similar to how propofol used for sedation does not reduce pain itself, but can lessen distress by preventing the memory of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, drowsiness and an actual reduction in itching must be distinguished. In a study of 155 children with atopic dermatitis who had nocturnal itching and scratching, chlorpheniramine did not reduce symptoms more than placebo.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12145433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a 2026 analysis pooling 6,230 participants from 47 clinical trials, adding an oral H1 antihistamine to atopic dermatitis treatment did not reduce itching to a level patients could meaningfully perceive. Improvement in sleep disturbance was also not confirmed.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/42526949\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, even when used at night, you must check whether drowsiness or reduced concentration persists into the next day. Peniramin should not be considered a substitute for other dermatitis treatments or a medication to take daily for the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sec-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cost of sedation: anticholinergic adverse effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from the convenience of being available without a prescription and the sedating effect mentioned above, Peniramin Tablets have few advantages over second- and third-generation agents. This is because cumulative anticholinergic effects have been reported to be associated with falls, delirium, and cognitive decline.<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12478568\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8605959\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korean prescribing information for Peniramin Tablets also advises against use in patients with glaucoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or other lower urinary tract obstructive conditions, or in those taking MAO inhibitors (such as certain antidepressants like moclobemide and Parkinson\u2019s disease medications like selegiline).<sup><a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/health.kr\/searchDrug\/result_drug.asp?drug_cd=A11A0450A0085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hpft.nhs.uk\/information-and-resources\/pharmacy-and-medicines-optimisation\/medicines-formulary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12<\/a>,<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a697046.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second- and third-generation antihistamines were developed to overcome these disadvantages.
